Last week, Own My Life attended the She Matters conference, hosted by Imago Dei Prison Ministry in London. We had a fabulous day filled with inspiration, reflection, and meaningful conversations.
This year’s theme, Look Beyond the Surface, explored the mental, emotional, and physical journeys of women in the criminal justice system. The event asked important questions: How can we nurture women? How can we create pathways for women to thrive both in prison and upon release? It was a powerful reminder that we all deserve the chance to grow, and that understanding and support can make all the difference.
Speakers delivered insightful and thought-provoking talks, sharing personal stories and professional perspectives on trauma, resilience, mental health, and empowerment. We also had the chance to meet some truly inspiring people, whose dedication and experiences left a lasting impression. Insights from the day reinforced the importance of connection, understanding, and collaboration in creating positive change.
The devastating reality that the cause of most women's imprisonment and criminality can be traced to men's abuse of them, was ever-present during the event. This is why we are so committed to seeing women in prison, and those under probation, given access to Own My Life courses, and to train those who work with women in the criminal justice system. We recently saw the first Own My Life course delivered with women in prison (read more about that HERE), is a first step in our hopes to be a resource to those in the criminal justice system who are passionate about seeing women enabled to own their lives.
Attending the event was a wonderful opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and reflect on the work we do at Own My Life. We left feeling motivated, encouraged, and reminded of the power of belief, solidarity and community in empowering women to build and reclaim their confidence and their lives.
