ECDV is the European Conference on Domestic Violence. Founded in 2015 by European-based academics and activists, it’s a four-day conference that happens every other year. It’s attended by around 1000 people, with hundreds of presentations across the conference. Many of the participants are from Europe, but lots attend from elsewhere in the world. The next one is in Dublin on 5th – 8th September 2027.
The conference seeks to bridge gaps between academia and practice. Most of the conference organisers are academics. I’ve attended the conference twice (Reykjavik in 2023 and Barcelona in 2025). I am a practitioner, but I’ve spent some time around academic spaces (and started a PhD in 2025) so have become a bit more literate in academic “conventions” than many practitioners. Both times I attended ECDV, I had been accepted to present (a workshop in 2023, a symposium in 2025) and I wrote some reflections about the Barcelona ECDV in 2025 HERE.

Overall I have found that all of the stages of ECDV are a bit mystifying. I’ve spoken to various practitioners who found the conference very discombobulating and so I have appointed myself unofficial ECDV demystifier. To that end, I’m going to write posts designed to demystify the ECDV process in the hopes it might help others; including those who are new to academic spaces and those for whom ECDV 2027 is their first academic conference. I’ll cover:
Applying to contribute: available HERE.
Preparing to attend.
Getting the most out of attending.
Debriefing from the conference.
ECDV has such potential as a place for learning, connecting and making a difference for women and I hope any comments I make about the event are taken in a spirit of wanting ECDV to be the best space for everyone. I’m neither an official guide nor an academic, but I hope this guide helps anyone considering attending ECDV to get the most from it.
For now, it’s worth being aware that applications to present at ECDV 2027 opened on 6th July and will remain open until 30th October 2026. Nothing seems to happen very quickly in academia!
