This week Own My Life was delighted to host Survival, Not Disorder: Applying The Power Threat Meaning Framework To Women’s Survival Of Men’s Domestic Abuse.
The Power Threat Meaning Framework is an incredible resource developed by the British Psychological Society as a response to the ways human distress is being severely pathologised across the UK (and the West more generally). The process was led by the Framework’s Lead Co-authors Professor Mary Boyle and Dr Lucy Johnstone. Since 2018, the framework has grown in prominence within mental health services and beyond to provide clinians, practitioners and distressed individuals (and those who care about them) to have non-medicalised ways of unterstanding distress and difficulty.
Rather than being a clinical guide or even defining a new way of working with people, the Framework offers a different paradigm for how we think about people, their distress and the services we offer. Those familiar with Own My Life will know that our course and training includes a video and activities to use with women, to build literacy about the Framework. We believe it to be a crucial resource in enabling women to own their lives!
There are many different resources that have been inspired or developed from the Framework, including Patterns. Patterns are documents that apply the Framework to particular cohorts of people; giving guidance on how the Framework can support individuals and those who care about them.
This event comes at the end of an almost eighteen month process to develop a Power Threat Meaning Framework Pattern for women subjected to abuse by a male partner. This Pattern was developed by Framework Lead Co-Author, Mary Boyle, Framework Working Group Members Amanda Griffiths and Jan Bostock, and Natalie Collins, CEO and Founder of Own My Life.
This week’s event was an opportunity to share this new Pattern with the world, offer an oportunity to better understand the Framework as a whole, and to create a space for reflection and connection. We had over 200 participants and brilliant contributions from:
Both of the Framework’s Lead Co-Authors, Mary and Lucy.
Pattern Co-Author and new Own My Life Trustee, Jan Bostock.
Own My Life Facilitator, Karen Connell.
Our Founder and CEO, Natalie Collins.
We had hoped to also hear from the brilliant Professor Ravi Thiara, learning from her 2024 research Why Should Our Rage be Tidy? Minoritised Survivors' Experiences of Mental Health in the context of Violence Abuse (available HERE), but she was sadly unable to join us.
Thank you to all who attended the event and to all our contributors. Please do share the recording and resources far and wide!
