We are incredibly grateful to Amazon for making a generous £12,000 donation to support Own My Life’s work resourcing police forces across the UK. This funding will help us better serve female officers and staff who have been subjected to abuse by a partner or ex-partner; an area where specialist, sensitive support is urgently needed.

As we have previously shared HERE, women working within policing face unique and often complex barriers when seeking help due to their partner harming them. In some cases, the abusive partner may also be a police officer. This form of police-perpetrated abuse is still not well understood, and many women describe feeling ashamed, fearful of judgement, or unsure where they can safely turn for support. These challenges make tailored, trauma-informed responses absolutely vital.

Leading our Partnership Development, Victoria Mason (who was previously a police officer herself) says about this funding,

“This very generous support from Amazon goes beyond funding; it will provide a lifeline for female police officers, staff and volunteers, nationally, who have been subjected to domestic abuse, transforming lives.”

We have already seen the Own My Life course delivered successfully within the Metropolitan Police, with other forces now following their lead. Thanks to Amazon’s support, we will be able to train 20 more officers and police staff to deliver Own My Life within their own forces, expanding access to life-changing support for women across UK policing. The impact of this cannot be overstated.

Women working in police settings have told us that attending Own My Life has been transformational. Some were seriously considering resigning before joining the course; many credit the programme, and the support they received throughout it, as a significant reason they stayed in their roles. Others have since been promoted, and many share that they feel healthier, more confident, and have taken fewer sick days after completing the course.

The benefits reach far beyond individual wellbeing. Officers who have completed Own My Life say the programme has strengthened their ability to recognise abuse and advocate for women reporting it. This has contributed to improved police responses and, in some cases, perpetrators being charged. This is real systems change; change that begins with women being supported, believed, and empowered.

We are delighted that Amazon has chosen to support this vital work, and we know that their contribution will make an enormous difference to women’s lives. Their generosity will help us continue driving meaningful, lasting change in police cultures and responses, one course, and one woman, at a time.
